Post surgery support

If you’ve volunteered to help a friend or relative get to and from East Melbourne Specialist Day Hospital for their surgery, here’s what you need to know.

They will not be able to drive for a minimum of 24 hours after surgery, so you’ll need to drive or escort them home. They’ll need help looking after themselves so they can rest, and if you’re able to stay with them overnight that is preferable.

We will inform both you and the patient of the anticipated discharge time on admission, and will call you after the operation with a more accurate time. There is a comfortable waiting room in the ground floor reception area of East Melbourne Specialist Day Hospital and there are plenty of shops and cafes nearby. Square and Compass directly opposite the day hospital provide a great selection of meals, snacks and coffee. There is also plenty to do on Victoria Parade, or you can take a walk to Fitzroy Gardens or wander up Smith Street for shopping and a bite to eat.

After surgery, the patient should rest at home for the remainder of the day. If you have any concerns about how their recovery is progressing, please call their doctor immediately.
