Fertility, Gynaecology & IVF in Melbourne

East Melbourne Specialist Day Hospital provides an extensive range of fertility, gynaecology and IVF surgery in Melbourne.

Fertility surgery

If you’ve been trying to conceive for more than 12 months (or six months if you’re over 35) with no success, your doctor may advise further testing and potentially fertility treatment.

Day surgery is often all that’s needed to investigate the causes of infertility, and can also treat problems that affect your ability to conceive naturally. These include:

  • Laparoscopy
  • Endometriosis treatment
  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) treatment
  • Fallopian tubes surgery
  • Microsurgery

At East Melbourne Specialist Day Hospital our specialist surgeons include some of Australia’s leading experts in both male and female infertility issues.

Gynaecology procedures

Our doctors have years of experience diagnosing and treating the symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis. In some cases, laparoscopy surgery may be needed for diagnosis or management.

What is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatments can offer many couples their best chance of conceiving naturally, and are normally used to overcome endometriosis, male infertility and unexplained infertility issues.

During IVF treatments, a woman’s ovaries are stimulated to produce eggs that her fertility specialist will collect. This procedure is not complicated and means the eggs can then be prepared and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilised embryos take two to five days to develop and are then transferred into the woman’s uterus, using a method similar in technique to a pap smear.

As an IVF patient at East Melbourne Specialist Day Hospital, we can take care of the egg collection process as well as your specialist appointments, blood and ultrasound monitoring and counselling services. The embryology and andrology laboratories are also located onsite making your IVF journey much more convenient.

How long is the egg collection procedure?

Normally it will take between ten and 15 minutes, and you will need a light anaesthetic. IVF scientists will be in the theatre with your fertility specialist to instantly examine the eggs and transport them carefully to the laboratory next door for fertilisation.

How will I feel after surgery?

You may experience mild cramps after the egg collection procedure. Your doctor or IVF specialist will come to see you before you leave East Melbourne Specialist Day Hospital to advise how many eggs were successfully collected.
